Once again I had to execute yet another study of green apples. After finishing a small study of this same arrangement, I decided to launch into a massive study with a huge upper expanse of white. All the air above the subject creates a sense of weight, as though the apples are having the effect of balance and gravity on the bottom of the composition. I pushed the brightness of the reflected colors so the shadows became full of light and air, and despite some fairly heavy brushwork, I believe this piece has a very playful sense of motion and levity. This is a celebration of simplicity, in finding the least amount of colors and brushstrokes to convey the mass and weight of the apples. The stems are some fun little shots of orange, and I set up a yellow board to reflect a bit of color into the drop shadows, to create a sense of warmth.
